چکیده

Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta E C O N O M I C R E V I E W First Quarter 2002 T he federal government created the Federal National Mortgage Association (Fannie Mae) and the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation (Freddie Mac) to enhance the availability of mortgage credit by providing stability and liquidity to the secondary mortgage market. These government-sponsored enterprises (GSEs) have become significant players in the mortgage markets generally and dominate the “conforming” mortgage market. Their size and mission have given the federal government an ongoing interest in their financial stability. In terms of asset size, if both GSEs were bank holding companies, Fannie Mae would be the second-largest banking organization in the United States, and Freddie Mac would be the fifthlargest (as of the end of the third quarter of 2001). Moreover, with the diminished issuance of U.S. Treasury securities in recent years, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are trying to establish “benchmark” debt issues that can be used by investors for pricing other securities and as hedging instruments. To the extent that the GSEs are successful, these efforts would not only reduce their financing costs but also add to their importance to financial markets. The government’s interest in Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac is not limited to their important role to financial markets. Like the largest commercial banks, the GSEs are thought by many investors to benefit from an implicit government guarantee. That is, if Fannie Mae’s and Freddie Mac’s Voluntary Initiatives: Lessons from Banking

Genetic Programming Evolution of Controllers for 3-D Character Animation

The dominant paradigm for 3-D character animation requires an animator to specify the values for all degrees of freedom of an articulated figure at key frames. Specifying motion that is physically believable and biologically plausible is a tedious practice requiring great skill. We use evolutionary techniques (specifically Genetic Programming) as a means of controller synthesis for character an...

Complete mitochondrial genome sequence of the Eastern gorilla (Gorilla beringei) and implications for african ape biogeography.

The Western and Eastern species of gorillas (Gorilla gorilla and Gorilla beringei) began diverging in the mid-Pleistocene, but in a complex pattern with ongoing gene flow following their initial split. We sequenced the complete mitochondrial genomes of 1 Eastern and 1 Western gorilla to provide the most accurate date for their mitochondrial divergence, and to analyze patterns of nucleotide subs...

Genomic and Biochemical Analysis of the Diaminopimelate and Lysine Biosynthesis Pathway in Verrucomicrobium spinosum: Identification and Partial Characterization of L,L-Diaminopimelate Aminotransferase and UDP-N-Acetylmuramoylalanyl-D-glutamyl-2,6-meso-Diaminopimelate Ligase

The Gram-negative bacterium Verrucomicrobium spinosum has attracted interest in recent years following the sequencing and annotation of its genome. Comparative genomic analysis of V. spinosum using diaminopimelate/lysine metabolic genes from Chlamydia trachomatis suggests that V. spinosum employs the L,L-diaminopimelate aminotransferase (DapL) pathway for diaminopimelate/lysine biosynthesis. Th...

Primary acute lymphoblastic leukemia cells use a novel promoter and 5'noncoding exon for the human reduced folate carrier that encodes a modified carrier translated from an upstream translational start.

The human reduced folate carrier (hRFC) is reported to be regulated by up to seven alternatively spliced noncoding exons (A1, A2, A, B, C, D, and E). Noncoding exon and promoter usage was analyzed in RNAs from 27 childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) specimens by real-time PCR and/or 5' rapid amplification of cDNA ends (5' RACE) assay. By real-time PCR, total hRFC transcripts in ALL span...
